Why drivers are cautioned to maintain a distance while applying breaks???

pls be quick, I have my exams tommorow............

When we apply the brake, decelerations acts on the body due to which velocity of the body decreases.
But when we apply the brake it takes some time to reduce the velocity to zero , therefore drivers are cautioned to maintain some distance while applying the brake.
