why epidermis is called protective tissue and why epidermis of desert plant is covered with waxy substance ?

Epidermis is the first layer of the body of both plants and animals that acts as the first line of defense against various types of harmful objects. It protects the other parts of the body from injuries, bacterial attacks etc. For this reason, epidermis is known as protective tissue. The desert plants are covered with waxy cuticle layer to avoid excess loss of water through transpiration due to excess heat.

EPIDERMIS IS CALLED THE PROTECTIVE TISSUE BECAUSE

LEAF EPIDERMAL CONTAINS SMALL PORE LIKE STRUCTURES CALLED STOMATA WHICH HELP IN TRANSPIRATION AND EXCHANGE OF GASES.

ROOT EPIDERMAL INCREASES THE SURFACE AREA FOR ABSORPTION OF WATER.

IN DESERT PLANTS EPIDERMIS HAS A THICK WXY COATINFG OF CUTIN THAT PREVENTS LOSE OF WATER.

epidermis is called protective tissue because it forms the outermost covering of a plant whic protects the plants from different harmful causes.epidermis of plant contains small openings known as stomata these stomata perform the function of losing excess water which is known as transpiration.as there is scaracity of water in desert the epidermal layer(which has stomata) is covered with a waxy layer to prevent the loss of water through transpiration and as it is very hot in the surroundings the most of the water present in plant will be evaporated and the plant will die.

Epidermis is the outermost protective layer of plant organs. It is usually single layered . The cells of epidermis are flat. Outer and side walls of most epidermal cells are thicker than the inner walls.

-Epidermal cells of aerial parts of the plant secrete a waxy, water resistant layer on their outer surface. It protects them against loss of water, mechanical injury and any attack by pathogenic fungi.

-Protective tissues prevent desiccation (loss of water from plant body), infection, and mechanical injury.

-Helps in preventing the entry of pathogens.Cork, which is a protective tissue, is light and does not catch fire easily.

desert plants have lower rates of absorption of water but higher rates of transpiration. r.In desert plants, outer walls of the epidermis are usually thick and covered with CUTIN. Cutin is a chemical substance that is waterproof and reduces loss of water by transpiration.
