Group 17 elements are called halogens because halogen is a Greek word which means 'salt producing'. Halogens include fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. They all are non-metals. They react with metals to form compounds called salts.

Group 17 elements of the periodic table contains the essentials fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. These fundamentals are communally known as the HALOGENS. This surname is derivative from two Greek words Halo and Gens meaning 'salt producing'. Halogens are amid the mainly reactive non-metals. There is superior similarity within the halogen group compare to extra groups in the periodic table with the exclusion of the alkali metals. Astatine is radioactive and is therefore not of any realistic significance.
