why had such a huge crowd gathered outside ranga's house? what made the crowd melt away?

in that particular period of time, people considered english as a commodity and not as mere language. people respected a person who knew english a lot. people believed that a person who knew english would change completely, so poor they did not know that only the attitude changes. moreover ranga was the first person to move away from the village for studying english. now the villagers gathered in flock around ranga`s house to know whether he has changed or not.
they melted like sugar on knowing that he is the same accountant`s son ranga and has not changed .
