Why Imbibtion is the first process? Give a breif account and list out the different processes in correct order happening during seed germination.

Dear student,
Imbibition is the diffusion of water on to the colloidal surface. Seed surface is a colloidal surface which helps in adsorption of water as seed comes in contact with water therefore it is the first step in seed germination.
There are three steps involved in seed germination:-
1) Imbibition leads to swelling of seed which results in rupturing of seed coat.
2) Respiration occurs due to gain of water and metabolic activity restarts.
3) Seed germination begins in presence of light.
4) Stored food in the embryo is metabolized to provide energy.
5) Finally cotyledons expand to form true leaves and the formation of seedling occurs.
