Why in English in island 's' isn't pronunced why?

A word in English can have one or more letters that are silent and thus their sound is not considered in its pronunciation.
In the word island, the letter 's' is silent, thus the word is pronounced as 'i-land'.
Other such words are - honest (h is silent), know (k is silent), psychology (p is silent).
