why is a separating funnel narrow at the bottom

It is because, in broad bottom, more amount of liquid could be dropped and in this way the lower density liquid which is above the high density liquid in the funnel could also come along with.

Hence, the end is narrow so that the liquid comes out in the form of drop and in controlled manner so that unwanted amount does not come out.
