Why is diffusion insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of multicellular organisms like humans?

In multicellular organisms especailly human beings ... the many layers of cells cause the ratio of surface area to volume ratio to be very low .... Hence rate of diffusion is very slow and hence most of the multicellular organisms won't survive .... In addition to it diffusion can transfer gases to small distances only .... Hence, diffusion of O2 is insufficient to meet the requirement of multiucellular oragnisms like human beings .....

multicellular organisms with a few cells can only survive by this process of oxygen diffusion ..... not the ones like human beings ...

Each living cell need o2 for cellular respiration.If diffusion takes place to supply o2 then obviously cell to cell division takes place which is an extremely slow process. Passing of o2 from nose to toes through trillions of cell will take about 3 years. Howsoever we cannot survive without oxygen even for 3 seconds. So diffusion is not sufficient to meet the o2 requirement for multicellular organism.

Every living cell requires oxygen for performing cellular respiration. In unicellular organisms (e.g. amoeba), the single cell is in direct contact with environment. Oxygen paases inti it through diffusion. In dimple multicellular organisms (e.g. hydra), every cell may also take oxygen through diffusion from environment. This is not possible in complex multicellular organisms like humans. The body is covered by deade cells. The living cells are not in direct contact with environment. Air containing intercellular spaces are absent. Therefore, quick diffusion cannot occur. Cell to cell diffusion is a very slow process. Passage of oxygen from lungs to toes through cell to cell will tak5 about three years. Therefore, diffusion cannot meet the oxygen requirement of multicellular organisms like humans.

In multicellular organisms there are so many cells and they are not on direct contact with environment. And diffision is a slow process , diffusin can not satisfy the oxygen requirement in the cells. This will lead to improper functioning of the body and also lead to fatigue. By dofussion it will take 3 years to provide oxygen to each cell from lungs to toes. Hope it will help

in large multicellular organisms like humans the oxygen of air will have to travel large distances inside the human body to reach each and every cell of the body. Now since diffusion is a very slow process,it will take a very long time to make oxygen available to all the body cells .Thus diffusion is insufficient to meet the oxygen requirement of multicellular organisms like humans because the volume of human body is so big that oxygen cannot diffuse into all the internal cells of the human body quickly. So when the size of the multicellular organisms is large then respiratory pigments present in blood take up the oxygen from he air in the lungs and carry it quickly to all the body cells

1) diffusion is a very slow process , it would take about 3 years to travel for a molecule of oxygen from lungs to our toes
2)oxygen is very less soluble in blood so that , if haemoglobin would not present in our blood , then oxygen requirement is not fulfilled
