why is force of friction  called contact force?

frictional force is the force between the body nd earth surface. so whether the surface is rolling surface, sliding surface it will exert some force in opposite direction of its motion.........so there has to b a contact between the body nd d earth surface.........therefore fricitional force is a contact force
