Why is 'her' used as a pronoun for England in the following sentence? -
'England has been famous for  her dramatists, the greatest of whom was William Shakespear.'

Countries are usually addressed as 'her' or 'she' in keeping with the theme of them being 'motherlands'. It is accepted to address countries as females. That is why England is addressed as 'her'.
