According to the Ghost, Love alone can open the gates of Death, because Love is stronger than Death. However, on a closer study of the sub-text it seems that Love and Death are almost synonymous. It is the purity and simplicity of Virginia that the Ghost finally finds peace. The Ghost only dreams of being free and finally be received by the Angel of Death. This metaphor tells us that for the Ghost Love represents Death. Virginia seem to be Love in the mortal sense of the term, because it is her love and her selfless acts that helps the Ghost achieve redemption.
