Why is nitrous oxide called the laughing gas?Can you plz explain its mechanism which leads to laughing?

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is commonly known as laughing gas due to the euphoric effect on inhaling it. It is thought that N2O blocks a particular type of receptor (i.e. glutamate) in the brain. Thus, it produces anaesthesia after its inhalation and a sense of giggle is felt by the person who has inhaled it, which ultimately leads to laughing.
