Why is option (b) the answer & not (d)?
Dear Student,
Maximum dehydration takes place in (b) because of the high acidic nature of the CH2 group between C-OH and C=O groups, as compared to the other compounds.
This is because C=O group is electron withdrawing, thus leading to the creation of a partial positively charged center on the adjacent carbon and thus increasing its acidity.
Hope it helps.
