Why is Panchayati Raj system very important in a large country like ours?

And it is also important for the welfare of people.

in a country as big as ours, direct implementation of policies in not possible, also its is near impossible to have a bottom-down approach towards development. so, Panchayti Raj system is a necessity as it helps in policy formulation at the village level. Aslo, it is a step towards de-centralisation of power and funds.

 Area wise, India is the 7th largest country in the world with a population of nearly 1.2 billion people.  With such large people to administer the Central and the State government will not be able to reach out to the predominant rural areas.  Hence in 1990 the third level of government called the Panchayati Raj or Local Self-Government was added.  This system works because there is involvement of the local people who best know their problems and ways of solving them.  It also provides a platform for the women to participate in the administration of the country. It is compulsory that 1/3rd of the members of the Panchayat are women.
