In five kingdom classification, eukaryotic organisms are divided into four groups. Plantae, animalia, fungi and protists.
Organisms are placed into plantae, animalia and fungi based on their respective characteristic features. Whereas, organisms that do not resemble with the characteristic features of plantae, animalia or fungi were placed in protists. So for this reason protists were considered as dustbin of classification, as in dustbin we throw junks which is not of any use or doesn't fit anywhere.
