Why is sodium hydrogen carbonate an essential ingredient is antacids?

Solution

Sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) is basic in nature. when it comes in contact with an acid it reacts with it and neutralises the acid. An antacid is a substance taken by a person suffering from acidity. the antacid contain a mild base which neutralises the excess HCl in the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate being a basic salt is thus used in antacids.
