why is solution of Na2CO is alkaline

Sodium carbonate when dissolved in water is hydrolysed by it to form the hydroxide (OH-) ion and the bicarbonate ion (HCO3-). Thus its solution is alkaline in nature due to the presence of these two ions in solution and hence the pH of an aqueous solution of Na2CO3 is more than 7.

When sodium carbonate is added to water, it hydrolyses to give sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide (a strong base). As a result, the solution becomes alkaline.
