Squire Cass was bad-tempered, neglectful, arrogant and a terrible father to Dunstan. However, he is referred to as the greatest man in Raveloe by virtue of his wealth and authoritative demeanour. He revelled in the exhibition of his wealth, throwing annual New Year's Eve parties because he like to perform the role of the generous and jovial patron. He thought highly of himself, attaining a king-like stature in the little town of Raveloe.
