Why is the image of engine evoked by the poet?

Dear Student,

As it is the autumn season, the leaves of the laburnum tree in the poem 'The Laburnum Top' have dried up and fallen down. The tree was silent and dying when one day, the goldfinch bird came to the top of the laburnum tree with her family. The image of a machine refers to the young ones of the bird. This is because just like a machine, the children also make a lot of noise when they see their mother coming with food. The image of the engine is evoked by the poet to describe the goldfinch as the life of her children and the tree depends on her.
