Why metal oxides and hydroxides neutralize acids but do not react with bases?

Dear Student,
We know that metal oxides are basic in nature while non metal oxides are acidic in nature. Metal oxide and hydroxide are basic in nature because metals formally contains oxide O2- ion which reacts with water to give hydroxide ions. Metal hydroxide like NaOH, LiOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2 etc are acting as bases. Metal oxide which acts as base when react with acid then it will undergo neutralization reaction forming salt and water as product.
Metal oxide cannot react with base as metal oxide and hydroxide are base and as we know that in general one base does not react with other base due to the similar chemical and physical properties.

metallic oxides and hydroxides belong to the group of bases...base cannot react with base
