why only certain elements possess the remarkable property of forming coordination compound?

Coordination compounds are formed by the donation of electron pairs from ligands to metal ions. Now, those metal ions which have empty p or d orbitals can  accept the electron pairs from ligands.Therefore, transition elements which have partially filled d orbitals can easily form coordination compounds.
