Why Pure Zinc is not used to prepare hydrogen

Pure zinc is not used for the preparation of hydrogen gas because it is non-porous. As a result, the reaction carried out with pure zinc would be too slow. Hence impurities like copper is often added to the zinc. Copper acts as a catalyst ( by providing a large surface area ) and increases the speed of the reaction.

@ Ajith, very good effort, keep it up !!!!

Instead of pure zinc, impure zinc i.e. with copper as the impurity is used to produce hydrogwn because copper acts as a positive catalyst and therefore increases the rate of speed of the reaction. And pure zinc is not used becauseit will make the proces very slow.

Hope it helps.

because pure zinc will react with hudrogen so impure zinc is used with some impuities such as copper which will act as a positive catalyst and increases the rate of reaction.

Granulated zinc is preferred over pure zinc because it contains impurities like copper which catalyst the reaction and prevants the decomposition of gas over it.
