why should materialof potentiometer wire be of high specific resistance?

Material of potentiometer wire be of high specific resistance so that the wire has high overall resistance and appreciable potential difference across its ends. Thus it improves resistance per unit length which helps in taking accurate reading as small wire length of the wire will give enough resistance so that it could be detected.

Potentiometer wire shoud be of high specific resistance so that even a comparable smaller length of the material alloy could suffice to give the desired value of resistance. Also, it must have a low temperature coeffecient because, then it would be independant of the surrounding changes in temperature while taking the readings.
