why swallowing and breathing cannot occur simuntaneously?

Epiglottis is the part of your body that flops down over the windpipe when you swallow to keep food from going into your oesophagus and not into windpipe. So when we eat, the Epiglottis has closed the flap which means the path to windpipe is blocked and breathing can't performed.Hence, breathing and swallowing cannot be done simultaneously.
