Why the 40s and 60s subunits of ribosomes form 80s and not 100s ribosome??? Plz explain this question with detail asap...

Dear student,
If these were unit of mass then we can add them and report it as 100.
But these are units of sedimentation coefficient , so this cannot be added together.
These relative value depends on the proteins and rRNA present in the ribosomes.
So , due to this reason we do not add them together and report it as 100S ribosomes.
