Secondly he assumed that Lomov had come to borrow money from him. Another reason is because he did not trust Lomov and was not a genuine person. Though he made his affection known through his words, his actions were quite opposite to them. Also, Lomov's visit was an unexpected one and therefore, this made Chubukov suspicious.
