why the reaction between calcium and water is not vigorous and can be controlled easiliy without amalgams or something like that?

Dear Student,

Calcium belongs to group 2 element. Group 2 elements have two electrons in their outermost shell and so have higher ionisation energy as compared to group 1 elements like Na, K. Therefore, they are less reactive as compared to group 1 elements. As a result, they react less vigorously with water in comparison to group 1 elements.
Therefore, reaction between calcium and water is not vigorous and can be controlled easily without amalgams.
