Why transaction made on dec 14 is contra entry explain?

Dear student cheques received on December 6 2016 is not yet deposited in the bank so same are treated as cheques in hand or say cash on the same date. so on December 14 when we will deposit the same in the bank it will be considered as contra entry because bank account will be debited and cheques in hand or cash account will be credited.
