Why transition elements are strong reducing agents?

Dear Student,

Transition metals are the good reducing agent as well as are the good oxidizing agents like KMnO4 & K2Cr2O7.
Transition metals show different oxidation states so they have empty d-orbitals in which they can gain electrons and the electrons which are in the d-orbitals, they can also donate those electrons.

Oxidizing agents oxidize others and get reduced themselves as well as they reduce other and themselves get oxidized. Hence transition elements are good oxidizing agents as well as good reducing agents.

because of their property of many oxidation states . like Mn has about 6 oxidation states (+2 ,+3,+4,+5,+6,+7 ) >because of these properties they are best reducing agents like BiH3

It has a tendency to form variable oxidation state.
