In the chapter 'Indigo', the British commissioner had asked Gandhi to leave Tirhut, but Gandhi disobeyed the order. Instead he went to Motihari along with some lawyers where he was served with an official notice to quit Champaran immediately. He signed the receipt of the notice but also wrote on it that he would disobey the order. He was summoned in the court because he had refused to obey the order of the police superintendent.
