Why was M. Hamel very pale?

Dear Student.

M. Hamel was pale because he had become emotional due to the fact that the time had come for him to leave the place where he had been for forty years, with his garden outside the window and his class in front of him. All the known sights of the desks and benches, the walnut-trees in the garden and the hop vine that he had planted himself broke his heart. Hearing his sister moving about in the room above, packing their trunks reminded him that this was the last French lesson that he would be teaching there, for they had to leave the country the following day.

We hope that this answer solves your query.
Regards.
