Why was me Gessler a failure in business

According to Mr. Gessler, big firms did not have any self-respect and they got the business by advertisements and not by work. He, on the other hand, did not believe in advertisements but believed in doing his work perfectly. But when he became old, he started taking a lot of time to complete the orders of the people. Thus, in spite of being a perfect shoemaker, he lost business and became a failure.
