Why was Mrs.Dorling surprised to see Mrs.S daughter?

Mrs Dorling was surprised because she was afraid that the narrator had come back to claim her belongings which rightfully belonged to the narrator's mother. Mrs Dorling had thought that they wouldn't survive the war and she would be able to hold on to the belongings. But the return of the narrator made her anxious about the narrator wanting to take back the things.
