Why was the ghost not seen on any nacturnal expedition?

The twins one day scared the ghost so badly, by jumping on him unexpectedly, that he felt completely trapped. He had to escape through the chimneys and flues, and reached his room in a state of disorder, despair and dirt. All put an end to the ghost's nocturnal expeditions.
