Why was the holy man who gave santosh's mother his blessings surprised

In the story 'Reach for the Top', when Santosh's mother was expecting her, a holy man came by to bless the unborn child. He was surprised to hear from Santosh's grandmother that they did not want a son but a daughter. He nevertheless gave his blessings and went away.
