Toto’s presence was kept a secret from grandmother because she did not approve of any addition to the already existing pets the grandfather had. So, Toto was kept in a closet that opened into the narrator’s bedroom wall and was tied to a peg fastened into the wall. However, the monkey managed to escape, tearing off the wallpaper. Later, he was put in a big cage in the servant’s quarters, where he troubled all other animals living there. He was even taken along by the grandfather to Saharanpur in a bag. Eventually, he got accepted by the grandmother and was given a home.
