With example explain the variation and temperature of rainfall in India.

Dear Student,
Temperature Variation
There is a lot of variation in temperature in India. Such temperature variation is caused by relief features, differences in climatic conditions. For instance,

  • Himalayas- They act as natural barriers to the extremely cold winds from Central Asia and enables North India to have more or less uniform temperatures. High mountains act as a barrier to rain-bearing winds and cause rainfall.
  • There is a lot of variation in the desert region as well which is warmer during the day and cooler at nights. The sand in the desert areas, during the day time, absorbs heat very quickly and after the sunset cools down very quickly.
For example, In summer, the mercury occasionally touches 50C in some parts of the Rajasthan desert, whereas it may be around 20C in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. On a winter night, the temperature at Drass in Jammu and Kashmir may be as low as minus 45C. Tiruvananthapuram, on the other hand, may have a temperature of 20C.
  • Coastal plains generally have a moderate temperature with high precipitation. The coastal regions do not experience many variations in temperature due to the moderating effect of seas. The presence of large water bodies helps in moderating temperature as the water warms and cools more slowly than land.
Rainfall Variation
The climate of India is described as monsoonal type. Monsoon refers to the seasonal reversal in the wind direction during a year. This type of climate is found mainly in the south and Southeast Asia. Despite an overall unity in the general pattern, there are perceptible regional variations in climatic conditions within the country. The precipitation is mostly in the form of snowfall in the upper parts of the Himalayas, it rains over the rest of the country. The annual precipitation varies from over 400 cm in Meghalaya to less than 10 cm in Ladakh and western Rajasthan. Most parts of the country receive rainfall from June to September. But some parts like the Tamil Nadu coast get most of its rain during October and November. There is a decrease in rainfall generally from east to west in the Northern Plains.
