A simple activity to understand the transfer of nutrients is as follows :
PROCEDURE-A large is taken and its outer skin is peeled off. One of its end is cut to make a flat base. A deep hollow cavity is then made on the opposite side. The cavity is filled with sugar solution and the level is marked by inserting a pin in the wall of this potato. This potato is placed in a dish with very small amount of water, the level is below the pin.
The apparatus is allowed to stand for a few hours.
RESULT-There would be an increase in the level of sugar solution.
INFERENCE- For very short distances water can move from one cell to another. In the same way water reaches xylem vessels of the root from the soil.
