A P J Abdul Kalam was born and raised in Rameswaram. He learned the virtues of honesty, generosity, self-discipline and kindness from his parents. He worked hard as a child to earn his first wages collecting newspapers. He shared a close friendship with Hindu boys in his simple town and believed in harmonious living despite the rigid differences in the communities of Hindus and Muslims. He learned the lessons of tolerance from his father, his friend’s father and his science teacher. He went for further studies to a bigger town.
