Dear Xyz,
Hope this letter finds you in the best of health. I know you share my enthusiasm for social reforms, hence I would like to share with you, my views about the various forms of violence, that we observe around us, in our society today. Just yesterday our house-help walked into our house, all battered and bruised. When we questioned her, she tried to avoid it by saying that she had a fall, but everyone knew it to be a case of domestic violence. When one thinks of violence we think of mass acts but there are so many other facets that we tend to ignore. Sexual violence, is perhaps one of the biggest malignant taints on our society today, which deems India to be one of the most unsafe countries for women in the world. Apart from that, there are cases of political violence, dowry deaths, mistreatment of children, honour killings etc. which make me really wonder sometimes, about how much humanity is really left in mankind. It is hard to believe that as humans, it is really that difficult for us to respect another human being, empathise with their beliefs and choices, and not lash out in misguided anger.
I sincerely do hope that one day, we can live in a world that is free of violence, and and that peace and harmony are not utopian dreams, but a reality.
