The Mesopotamian region was not rich in natural resources.
So the people felt the need to trade with the nearby countries for resources.
Trading began when farmers learnt the art of cultivation by irrigating their land.
The excess food was used for trading. Apart from food grains like barley, and other items like reeds,stone, ivory, textile was also an important item for trading.
In return the Mesopotamians received precious stones, wine and timber for building houses.
Trading was carried by land and water. Carts were used to trade items by land. But while trading by water they used rafts made of wood and animal skins, river boats and gulf boats.
