Cortes:
a. Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conqueror who controlled the Aztecs and resulted in their downfall.
b. He , he befriended a group Totonacs , who wanted to secede from the Aztec.
c. Cortes succeeded in conquering Aztec empire, by allying with the native group Tlaxcalans, who were enemies of the Aztec.
d. They together marched in Tenochtitlan, where Cortes met Montezuma, who was manipulated by the Spanish conquistador.
e. This allowed Cortes to rule Tenochtitlán through him and control Aztec.
f. Thus, strategy of Cortes claimed Mexico for Spain.
Aztecs:
a. The Aztec tribe was basically confined in the Central valley of Mexico in the 12th century.
b. Their society was hierarchical in nature ,with nobility comprising of priests, those by birth occupying a dominant position.
c. The nobles chose king among themselves who ruled them and was considered representative of sun on Earth.
d. Priests, warriors , priests enjoyed privileges and occupied top positions in the government.
e. The Aztecs also paid respect to teachers, artisans etc.
f. The Aztecs were also involved in land reclamation projects, built canals, also constructed their capital city Tenochtitlan..
g. They had beautiful architecture particularly those of temples.
h. They worshipped Sun and Gods of war.
i. The society was mainly agrarian , they cultivated potatoes, pumkins, corns, they also undertook public construction work.
j. Aztecs also sold their children as slaves.
k. They also gave emphasis to education, for both boys and girls.
l. The children of nobility were imparted religious and military training and education.
m. Others were given education on history, myths, religion. Girls were also educated about domestic work and skills.
