Dear Student,

India is a “Unity in diversity” with every state having its own cultural heritage and tradition yet united. Every place in India differs in customs, religion, food, language, traditions, and philosophy.Indian culture is thus an amalgamation of cultures of various states which are stitched together. Let us look at the different cultures of 28 states and 8 union territories of India. Lets us move from North to South and discover what each state has in store.
Cultures of different states-
1.Rajasthan, the land of Kings, has royal grandeur and a glorious history; it is a charming and captivating state of India.Mostly Rajasthani speaks Marwari language, as it is their native language.Traditionally men wear dhotis, kurta, angarkha, and paggar or safa (kind of turban headgear). Traditional Chudidar payjama frequently replaces dhoti in different regions. Women wear ghagra (long skirt) and kanchli (top). Famous dishes which Rajasthan is known for are Dal-Bati-Churma, Bikaneri Bhuji, bajre ki roti (millet bread) and lashun ki chutney (hot garlic paste), mawa kachori Mirchi Bada, Pyaaj Kachori and ghevar from Jodhpur, Alwar ka Mawa(Milk Cake), malpauas from Pushkar and rassgollas from Bikaner.Kathputli, Bhopa, Chang, Teratali, Ghindr, Kachchhighori, and Tejaji are examples of traditional Rajasthani culture.
2.Gujarat is also called as “Jewel of Western India” is known for its unique and rich culture.The women’s main dress is Chaniyo & Choli, while men wear Chorno & Kediyu.  Gujarati dishes are dhokla, pathra, samosa, Khaman while sweet dishes are mohanthal, jalebi, doodh pak.The folk dance raas-garba is very popular in Gujarat .
3.Punjab means the land of five rivers.The traditional dress for women is the salwar suit .The traditional dress for Punjabi men is the kurta and tehmat.andoori style of cooking commonly known as tandoor is traditionally associated with Punjab, tandoori cooking is now famous in other parts of India, the UK, Canada, and in many parts of the world. “Bhangra” men’s dance to the more reserved “jhumar,” the “gidha” women’s dance.
4.Uttar Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh is home to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.Kathak is a classical form of Uttar Pradesh involving gracefully coordinated movements of feet along with the entire body.There is numerous tourist attraction in the state and Taj Mahal is the most visited. while Varanasi, Allahabad, Ayodhya, and the Mathura-Vrindavan area; Buddhist centers such as Sarnath,
5.Kerala-The cultural variety of Kerala was created by its unique geographic features as it lies between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.Malayalam is the language spoken in the state and is the official language, while English is the additional official language.Kerala is the “land of spices”.A typical meal in Kerala is a curry, a bhaji, curd, papad and pickle accompanied with rice. Kathakali is a vibrant Kerala art form, where the artist wears elaborate costumes, face paint, and sometimes masks.The traditional dress of Kerala is called Mundu.
