Write a note on successors of genghiz khan( 5 marks)

Genghis Khan died in 1227. His successor was his third son Ogedei Khan, who was elected as the Khan in 1229. Under his reign, the empire expanded further to Korea, China, Russia and reached up to the borders of Eastern Europe. Ogedei died in 1241.

There was a short-lived reign by Ogedei's eldest son, Guyuk Khan from 1246-1248. Guyuk was succeeded by Mongke Khan, who was the son of Genghis's youngest son, Tolu. Hence, Mongke was Genghis's grandson. Under him, the Mongols defeated the Islamic caliphate and extended the empire to Iran and Western Asia. He died in 1251.

He was succeeded by his brother, Kublai Khan, who established the Yuan dynasty in China. Kublai died in 1294. After his death, the Mongol empire fragmented into four parts.
