• There are two types of scrap collectors. One who purchase scraps from homes, offices and shops.
• These people pay money for the items they collect.
• The other ones are who search the garbage heaps on dumping grounds, streets and street bins.
• They separate the recyclable items such as, polythene bags, glass and plastic bottles, things made of iron etc., from the garbage.
• Most of these ragpickers are migrants.
• A vast majority of these ragpickers come from UP, Assam or Bihar in search of jobs but land up searching these garbage dumps for survival.
• Children too are involved to help their families who are generally in need of extra income.
• These ragpickers don't have Id's thus they don't have access to government facilities like educational institutions and health care etc.
• Some NGO's are helping these ragpickers to get these basic services and live a better life.
