At 11:41am local time on April 25th, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors were felt across northern India and neighboring Bangladesh and Pakistan.

• On May 12th 12:50 local time, a second earthquake struck with a magnitude of 7.3 causing further significant damage and further loss of life. Powerful aftershocks continued for hours, including 5.6 and 6.3 magnitude tremors with epicenters in Sindhupalchowk and Ramechhap districts. According to the Government, a total of 32 districts were affected including those still recovering from the 25 April earthquake

• With the monsoon season beginning in June, providing emergency shelter to affected communities in remote and hard to reach areas is a priority. For the immediate response, high quality tarpaulins, tools and household items (including blankets) are needed. As of 8 May (18:00, UTC+5:45), the Government confirmed an increase in the total numbers to 288,798 houses destroyed and 254,112 damaged.

• Humanitarian agencies recorded cases of psychosocial trauma in affected communities. Additional mental health support services are needed. Coordination of debris management activities is reported to be an issue in all affected VDCs. This includes appropriate and safe demolition of destroyed or damaged structures.

• In Gorkha District Headquarters, electricity and water supplies are available and the market is functional. However, access to rural areas in the district remains difficult. Aftershocks continue, with two strong quakes recorded on 6 May causing additional landslides in rural areas, including in Laprak, Gunda and Lapu. In Laprak, humanitarian partners reported a lack of shelter, food, water and medicines.

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake (also known as the Gorkha earthquake)[5][8] killed nearly 9,000 people and injured nearly 22,000. It occurred at 11:56 Nepal Standard Time on 25 April, with a magnitude of 7.8Mw[1] or 8.1Ms[9] and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). Its epicenter was east of Gorkha District at Barpak, Gorkha, and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 8.2 km (5.1 mi).[1] It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake.[10][11][12] The ground motion recorded in Kathmandu valley was of long period that cause the limited human and property loss in kathmandu valley.[13]

The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing 21,[14] making April 25, 2015 the deadliest day on the mountain in history.[15] The earthquake triggered another huge avalanche in the Langtang valley, where 250 people were reported missing.[16][17]

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened,[16][18][19] across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square, the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the Changu Narayan Temple, the Boudhanath stupa and the Swayambhunath Stupa. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.[20][21]

Continued aftershocks occurred throughout Nepal at the intervals of 15–20 minutes, with one shock reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at 12:54:08NST.[4] The country also had a continued risk of landslides.[22]

A major aftershock occurred on 12 May 2015 at 12:50 NST with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.3.[23] The epicenter was near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mt. Everest.[24] More than 200 people were killed and more than 2,500 were injured by this aftershock.[25]
