- Write a short note on Adolescent Population in India.

a. Adolescents are generally grouped in the age-group of 10 to 19 years. It constitutes one-fifth of the total population of India.
b. Their nutritional requirements of are higher than those of a normal child or adult.
c. In India, the diet available to adolescents is not sufficient in terms of nutrients intake leading to deficiency. A large number of adolescent girls suffer from anaemia.
d. They constitute the future human resource of our country and deserves attention.
e. NPP 2000, laid stress on increasing the nutritional requirements of the adolescents, the policy put greater emphasis
on other important needs of adolescents including protection from unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases and greater education among them.
Problems faced by adolescents are:
a. Adolescents usually do not feel comfortable in the family or parties, because their thought process and likes usually do not match with the other people, neither with the children nor with the adults.
b. Due to hormonal changes they get problems such as pimples and other biological changes, they become comfortable with their sexuality and develop intimacy.
c. Adolescents usually start feeling insecure. Insecurity in adolescents arises sometimes because they are not able to cope with the pressure of high performance.
d. They face this problem of establishing their own identity. Many of them get into drinking habits, become rebellious.
f. Peer pressure and pressure of making their own mark and achieve something.A large number of adolescents girls suffer from anaemia They have less nutritional standards.
g. Adolescents are involved in pre marital sex, become victims of unwanted pregnancies.
Thus,in India NPP or the National Population Policy, 2000 identified adolescents as the age group that requires greater attention. whose main objectives have been:
a. It provides for imparting free and compulsory school education up to 14 years of age.
b . NPP 2000, laid stress on increasing the nutritional requirements of the adolescents
c. The policy put greater emphasis on other important needs of adolescents including protection from unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases and greater education among them.
d. It also talked of taking stringent measures against child marriage.
e. It emphasised that they constitute the future human resource of our country and deserves attention.
f. Also aims at promoting delayed marriage for girls.
g. The policy also aimed at educating and generating awareness among the adolescents about the risks of unwanted and unprotected sex.
h. It also aims at distributing contraceptive pills among them.
