 ARIKMEDU IS IN PUDUCHHERY BETWEEN 2200 AND 1900 YEARS AGO, ARIKMEDU WAS A COASTAL SETTLEMENT WHERE UNLOAD GOODS FROM DISTANT LANDS.RED-GLAZED POTTERY,KNOWN AS ARRETINEWARE,THIS NAMED AFTER A CITY IN ITALY.ROMAN LAMPS,GLASSWARE ANDGEMS HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND AT THIS SITE.

 Arikamedu is an archaeological site near Pondicherry, southern India, where Mortimer Wheeler conducted his best-known excavation in the 1940s. According to Wheeler, Arikamedu was a Tamil fishing village which was formerly a major Chola port dedicated to bead making and trading with Roman traders. Various Roman artifacts, such as a large number of amphorae bearing the mark of Roman potter schools VIBII, CAMURI and ITTA, have been found at the site, supporting the view on an ancient trade between Rome and theancient Tamil country of present day south India. Now Arikamedu is a part of AriyankuppamCommune. Arikamedu was an important bead making centre.

Arikamedu was a coastal settlement where ships unloaded goods from distant lands. A massive brick structure, which may have been a warehouse, was found at the site. Roman lamps, glassware and gems; pottery from the Mediterranean region such as amphorae and stamped red-glazed pottery, known as Arretine Ware was found from here. Plenty of evidence for the making of beads from semi-precious stones and glass has also been found. All these evidences show that Arikamedu was an important trading centre.

Arikamedu is an archaeological site in Southern India, in Kakkayanthope, Ariyankuppam Commune, Puducherry. It is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the capital, Pondicherry of the Indian territory of Puducherry. Significant findings at Arikamedu include numerous Indo-Pacific beads, which facilitated fixing the period of its origin. Red and black ceramics—known as megalithic stones or Pandukal in Tamil meaning "old stones" and used to mark graves—have existed at the site even prior to and during Roman occupation of the site, and also in later periods.
