It is a type of fossil fuel. It is a complex mixture of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen compounds. The slow conversion of dead plants and animals to coal is called Carbonization.

Petroleum is the lifeline of modern civilization. It is also known as black gold. Its black colour, viscous, strong smelling liquid. The word Petroleum derives from 'petra' meaning rocks and 'oleum' meaning oil.
