Cork is bark of a tree. Cork cells are actually dead cells present in the bark of stems. Under microscope they appear hexagonal or pentagonal in shape. Robert hook in 1665 actually first examined the cells of cork under microscope.  

Cork cells are air tight, dead, suberized and impervious to water which helps them not to allow entry of any microorganisms and also provide mechanical support or strength to the plant.

Characteristic of cork:  
Flexible. 
Light in weight. 
Compressible. 
Resistant to gas and liquid. 
Resistant to fire and abrasion.
